US West Coast Seafood and the EU Opportunity: A Market Access Primer

A session at Seafood Expo Global 2026 will explore what it takes for US West Coast seafood suppliers to successfully enter the European market. With EU traceability regulations evolving and tariff complexity reshaping sourcing decisions, the session arrives at a moment of real change in transatlantic seafood trade. What European buyers look for and what the opportunity means for suppliers on both sides.

A session at Seafood Expo Global 2026 will examine a commercial question gaining attention across the global seafood trade: what does it take for US West Coast seafood suppliers to successfully enter the European market?

The question is timely. US West Coast fisheries and aquaculture operations produce a range of species with strong consumer recognition in Europe, including Pacific salmon, Dungeness crab, halibut, and a selection of whitefish species. The session will explore whether European buyers, particularly in the foodservice and hospitality sector, are increasing their interest in alternative supply sources that offer consistent quality, reliable documentation, and competitive pricing in a market shaped by tariff complexity and regulatory pressure.

What European buyers may look for from US suppliers:

For US West Coast suppliers, the EU market presents both opportunity and regulatory complexity. Key requirements vary by product category, but generally include compliance with applicable EU catch certification and traceability standards, including the digital documentation requirements of the CATCH system for relevant imported fishery products. Sustainability certifications widely recognised in European retail and foodservice, such as MSC for wild-caught products and ASC for farmed species, are increasingly expected by buyers in many channels, rather than simply nice to have.

Beyond certification, European buyers typically expect detailed product specification sheets, cold chain documentation from processing through to delivery, and the ability to provide samples and technical information ahead of purchasing decisions.

What the session will cover:

The SEG26 session is expected to address the practical steps US suppliers need to take to position product effectively for European buyers, covering product positioning and market segmentation, buyer expectations across retail, foodservice, and wholesale channels, and the documentation and certification requirements for market entry. Program details are subject to change.

What it means for established suppliers:

For European buyers already working with established Asian and South American supply chains, the emergence of a well-positioned US West Coast supply option adds another dimension to sourcing strategy. The competitive dynamics will be worth watching.

Holt Seafood’s Barcelona team will be attending SEG26 and available to discuss how the European market is evolving and what buyers are prioritising in their sourcing decisions.

“The businesses that understand the requirements of multiple markets and maintain flexible sourcing relationships are best positioned for the road ahead.”
